Compulsory insulation requirements landlords need to be aware of
There has been a lot of media interest in landlords providing warm and dry homes to tenants added to recently by policy announcements in this election season.
On 31st May 2016, Parliament unanimously passed the Residential Tenancy Amendment bill that addressed smoke alarms and insulation.
Smoke Alarms
The requirement for smoke alarms came into effect on the 1st July 2016, and many of you are on our SATS program that provides annual inspection and compliance certification.
Insulation
The insulation section has two components. The first effective from 1st July 2016 requires a landlord statement on insulation on all new tenancies from that date. More important however is the requirement all rental homes must be insulated (where reasonable practical to install) by 1st July 2019.

Grants maybe available to landlords, but as we get closer to this date, any available grants may be exhausted. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible.
